r. Introduction Themajorityofthebrainimagingstudiesonbilingualismhavefocusedonthe question of the separation or overlap of the neural regions involved when a biIingual brain is *ort ing with one language or the other. Researchers have been especially interested in the roles of factors such as age of acquisition of the seco,,d lu,,g.,.g. and level of proficiency. In recent studies, however, new questions about the bilingual brain have started to be explored. For example, are there anatomical and/or functional differences between the brains of bilinguals and monolinguals? Do the interindividual differences in the ability to learn a second lurrgu"g"'.orr.late with brain differences? we will present recently published and ongoing work about these questions'

Brain structure predicts the learning of foreign speech sounds.
Previous work has shown a relationship between parietal lobe anatomy and nonnative speech sound learning. We scanned a new group of phonetic learners using structural magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging. Voxel-based morphometry indicated higher white matter (WM) density in left Heschl's gyrus (HG) in faster compared with slower learners, and manual segmentation of this struc...
متن کاملRelationship Between Iranian L2 Learners’ Multiple Intelligences and Language Learning Strategies
L2 learners’ multiple intelligences (MI) profile plays a central role in theirperformance on different aspects of language learning, one of which is the use oflanguage learning strategies (LLSs). Gaining insights into the relationship betweenMI and LLSs makes L2 teachers better understand their learners’ strengths andweaknesses in the use of such strategies and lets them guide the learners bett...

متن کاملDifferent Task Complexity Factors and Cognitive Individual Differences: The Effects on EFL Writers’ Performance
This study aimed at examining the main and interaction effects of increased intentional reasoning demands, planning time, and also language learning aptitude on syntactic complexity, accuracy, lexical complexity, and fluency (CALF) of 226 EFL learners’ performance on letter writing tasks. The participants were first randomly assigned to three experimental groups to be given a task with differin...
متن کاملOn the Interrelationships among Undergraduate English Foreign Language Learners’ Speaking Ability, Personality Traits, and Learning Styles
The vital role individual differences, such as personality variation, play has long been discussed as the origin of different learning abilities. Accordingly, a cross-sectional survey and a descriptive study was conducted. Data was gathered from a sample of 150 students of both genders (107 females and 43 males) with an age range of 19-22. The translated and validated versions of the Big Five p...
